skip to navigation the alkham valley community project about us the avcp has launched a new project, toddler riding sessions offers pony rides for 2 - 4 year olds. the new project is part of our response to the governments 'a new strategy for an active nation' which identifies that only 9% of under 5's meet the uk cmo guidelines for daily physical activity for this age group. the sessions are great fun and the children are learning lots. we use our team of lovely small ponies, sessions cost £8 and last for 20 minutes. if you are interested please contact us 01304 825 292 or through our facebook page, alternatively [email protected]. we are delighted and very proud to announce the success of our “raise the roof” campaign to establish an all-year indoor training facility for our community horse riding and carriage driving sessions, which will significantly enable us to expand the number and range of riding and other equestrian sessions that our centre runs at mount ararat, abbey road, hougham, dover. spearheaded by tracey jane crutchfield, our ‘raise the roof’ campaign commenced back in october 2015, rallying the community to take part in an array of fund raising events, and receiving donations from local organisations, culminating in the award of a major grant from the rural development programme for england (rdpe), jointly funded by the european agricultural fund for rural development (eafrd) and the department of food, environment and rural affairs (defra), managed by east kent local action group under the auspices of kent county council. we have also been fortunate to receive essential help from the kent community foundation, through their kent big society fund, to ensure that the significant funding timetable for this major project is fully underwritten. bbc children in need project continues for third year the avcp is hosting a project for disabled and disadvantaged children funded by bbc children in need for the third year running. centre is a registered charity providing: a) therapeutic activities for disabled and disadvantaged adults and children to promote their health and wellbeing. b) community participation in healthy recreation by the provision of facilities to learn skills related to horse riding carriage driving and horticulture. c)promoting the obects of the riding for the disabled association including carriage driving (charity number 244108) activity sessions run from a 40 acre site in the alkham valley between folkestone and dover in kent. the trustees of the avcp follow the philosophy that being out in the countryside, enjoying nature, taking part in sport, being active, exercising, learning and achieving is beneficial to all. strategic objectives access to rural environment improved for people with physical and learning disabilities, young people, children with emotional and behavioural difficulties, adults with mental health illness, carers and other groups who are vulnerable or hard to reach. access to equine sports for disabled and disadvantaged adults and children health and well-being of participants improved through physical activity, community involvement and learning. self-esteem and confidence of participants improved through achievements during riding and driving sessions, taking part in educational courses and training and taking part in competitions and training camps. vocational skills gained by staff, volunteers and participants through attending educational courses and training and also work experience placements at the project. future prospects of further training or employment in this field increased. lifeskills and social skills of volunteers and participants developed through involvement in the activities and opportunities run by the project such as working with others and as part of a team. communication through all aspects of the project is key and improvements in this area can be seen in particular with riding and carriage
